The American single-tube tire dominated the United States bicycle market for forty years, from the close of the 1890s Bicycle Boom to the Great Depression in the 1930s. ... During the single-tube's reign, bicycles fell almost totally out of general use in the United States -- a false start that has hampered American cycling ever since.

However, as I read the article, I realized it was eerily similar to the issues presented today. Take out the retrograde parts about "men" going to the office and "housewives", and the piece could have been in the latest issue of Time. The writer seemed very excited about the future of transportation cycling in America, yet 70 years later there's been no progress. To me this is horrific in a Twilight Zone kind of way.

Portland can't draw on a similar legacy. Our decision makers and elected officials did not grow up riding a bike comfortably and efficiently around a city (rubbing shoulders with their well-dressed peers).

The highways that radiate from Tottenville are much like those of today, except that they are broader with hardly any curves. In some of the older cities, difficult to change because of the immense investment in real estate and buildings, the highways are double-decked. The upper deck is for fast nonstop traffic; the lower deck is much like our avenues, with brightly illuminated shops.
